Motorway Safety Traffic Reflective Road Studs

Road reflectors, also called raised pavement markers, are designed to help control traffic while encouraging safer driving conditions.

The ‘Intelligent LED Road Stud’ is the evolution of the cat’s eye taking it from the simple reflective lane indicator to a powered light visible from a kilometre away, which can also be connected to other traffic systems and turned on and off to help direct traffic flow.

The innovative studs are visible up to 900 metres away – far greater than traditional reflective road studs – and have been proven to help stop drivers drifting between lanes, reducing the risk of collisions.

The intelligent road studs are being introduced as part of a £3 million project to improve journeys and safety at Switch Island in Merseyside, where the M57, M58 and 3 A roads all join together. The LED road studs light up when traffic lights turn green so drivers can clearly see which lane they should follow.

Where are amber reflective studs found on a motorway? Amber reflective studs are common on UK motorways. Rule 132 of the UK highway code relates to the use of reflective road studs with white lines and states that: Amber studs mark the central reservation of a dual carriageway or motorway.

Highways England are to use intelligent road studs which light up in response to changing traffic lights at the Switch Island motorway junction in Merseyside in an attempt to improve safety for drivers. In a first for the country, it’s installing around 170 of the innovative LED road studs where the M57, M58 and 3 A roads all join together.

The colour of reflective studs between a motorway and its slip road will be green. When you see green reflective studs you should take note that there is a slip road joining the main carriageway of the motorway. People may be turning on to or off from the motorway ahead.

These reflective road studs have a wide array of uses outside of the public highway. They are ideal for use in ports, warehouses, loading bays and other commercial environments. They can be used to mark lanes for vehicles at night clearly, and even to outline parking spaces for HGV’s.
