LED studs have been installed in Surrey to guide drivers through Hindhead Tunnel but Switch Island is believed to be the first time they have been used at a motorway junction.

These are often used in conjunction with two rows of the temporary cat's eyes to divide traffic moving in opposite directions during motorway roadworks. Solar-powered cat's eyes known as solar road studs and showing a red or amber LED to traffic, have been introduced on roads regarded as particularly dangerous at locations throughout the world.

LED road stud lights is charged through its solar panels during the day and runs automatically all night. LED road stud runs in flash mode to warn the driver. The new LED road studs are connected to the traffic lights at the junction, and light up green when the traffic lights switch to green. The studs can be seen from over 1,000 metres away, which is a far greater distance than the traditional cat’s eyes used across the UK’s motorways.

Smart lights in the road surface which help drivers stay in the correct lane have been introduced for the first time at a major motorway junction.
